How To Projects > Counted Cross Stitch Patterns
Cross Stitch is an embroidery art where almost all of the stitched design consists of tiny “cross” stitches that look like a small letter x. Because the x stitches fill a tiny square of space, cross stitch patterns are easily created and read in a square graph format. Cross stitch can be done on any fabric, but the most commonly used fabrics are linens and “Aida cloth” because it is easier to see tiny squares in the fabric threads. It is often called counted cross stitch because it is necessary to count the squares on the pattern graph and on the fabric threads to determine the correct placement for the stitches. The cross stitches can be stitched back to back to create a full color look in the design pattern. This makes cross stitch a great choice for stitching large designs with the color shading of a painting.
